Tectonic and metamorphic evolution of the Chugach Metamorphic Complex
south-eastern Alaska

FWF-project Nr. 19366-N10

PhD students: Emilie Bruand, Deta Gasser

Folded Gneiss Aerial view of the mountains Folded Amphibolite

Metamorphic complexes occur in various tectonic settings all over the world and a range of models has been proposed to explain both the metamorphism itself and the subsequent exhumation to the surface. The Chugach Metamorphic Complex (CMC) of south-eastern Alaska is an elongate zone of high-grade gneisses and migmatites exhumed between major strike-slip and thrust faults.

The aim of this project is (a) to characterize in detail variations in metamorphic grade across the complex (Bruand) and (b) to determine the exact timing of heating, peak metamorphism, cooling and exhumation (Gasser).

A detailed project description and progress report can be found here (in press in "Erstausgabe. Veröffentlichungen junger WissenschafterInnen der Universität Graz".)
